INTRO
"How do I..........?"
Hello & Welcome to OfficeWeb!
One of the primary purposes of OfficeWeb is to enable you to find the answer to the above question. Whenever you need to know "How do I...........?", take a few minutes & look through OfficeWeb before interrupting someone else. It's almost guaranteed you'll find something interesting & useful.OfficeWeb is a sort of behind-the-scenes tool designed for those of us here at the firm, and is intended as an office manual & Help system, with myriad how-tos, to-dos, and references for our everyday tasks.
It is as much of an authoritative book of Office Standards & "Help" system, as it is a compilation of our collective work efforts. Therefore, OfficeWeb (& everyone in the firm) greatly benefits from input by you! Please contact the Webmaster with any work sheets, task descriptions, tips & hints, etc. that you may have so that they may be included on our OfficeWeb.
OfficeWeb is what is known as an In
tranet. An Intranet is part of a firm's private network & is available only to those with access to the firm's computer network. This Intranet is available only to those of us with access to our office computer network. That is, it is not connected to the Internet & it is not available to persons surfin' the Internet.Those of you who "Surf the Net" will find our OfficeWeb very similar to the Internet. You "surf" our office "web pages" using the same "browser" software. For example, this is a "web" page & you are viewing it with a "browser".
Some major advantages of this system are;
Some of the kinds of information you can view are shown on the gray menu to the left. There are additional information links on most of the pages.
Keep in mind, you only View these "Web" pages kinda like viewing a slide or a "Viewmaster". This is what allows several people to view the same files at the same time. You cannot edit them unless you use the "
edit" button, or open a non-Web file; for example, a Spec section, a letter, or a CAD file). Please request permission before editing any of our Intranet "web" pages.
The main thing to remember is;
Use the "Back" (Ü ) & "Forward" (Þ ) browser buttons at the top-left of the window to move to the previous or "next" screen you have already viewed. For example, you got here from the "Home" page. If you click the " Back" (Ü) button it will take you back to the Home page. Click the "Forward" button from the Home page to get back here.
The keyboard is also very useful;
Single-click on blue hyperlinks to view linked topics. Click here to try it. The items listed in the left menu (usually gray) are hyperlinks. Click them to jump to each selection.
Double-click on pictures of file folders
& file names. Double-clicking on a file name will open the file for editing.
For example, double-clicking on a specification file name will automatically start the word processor & open the file, ready for editing. When you close the file, you will be returned to the OfficeWeb Intranet.
You will usually see these folder or file names (they will usually be on a white background) when you click on "MasterSpecs", "Active", or "Archived Projects" near the bottom of the OfficeWeb menu on the left side of the screen. This is a very convenient way to work on files. We highly recommend that you try it.
Start OfficeWeb by clicking the icon on your screen (or by pressing F12 on most computers).
If you wish to print
something on the screen, beware. The entire file will print, including the parts not on the screen. This is fine if it is a short file such as this one (this one takes "only" 9 sheets of paper). However some files are many sheets long (i.e. DataCAD Handbook, Office Handbook are over 30 sheets) & will take a long time to print & unnecessarily tie up the printer, & waste paper & ink.
If you wish to print only a portion of the file (recommended);
Alternatively, you can "Copy & Paste" a highlighted portion into word processor file, then print out your newly created file.
SEARCH & FIND;
To "SEARCH" the entire OfficeWeb;
This is a 2-phase process, but it's not as difficult as the instructions sound. Once you do it, it's quite easy!
"Searching" Link
PHASE II;
If you wish to Find something quickly on a Web page that you are already viewing, let the computer help!
Example;
Go ahead & try it now. In the blank, type in the phrase "My Name", without the quotations. If the phrase in quotations in the previous sentence is highlighted, you Found It! When you are finished "Finding", click the "Cancel" button on the "Find" dialog box.
This is very useful for Finding information within a Web page, especially on the longer Web pages such as;
"Find" Tips (If you got here thru a link, you can click "Back" to return to the previous view);
It's very easy to save locations you wish to return to. Just click the "Favorites" menu at the very top (between "Go" & "Help").
,
You're Finished. An alternative is to simply Right-Click on the background & select "Add to Favorites".
This makes it easy to return to the location later by simply clicking on the name of a favorite (Similar to GoToView in DCAD). Go ahead, save this location to your "Favorites" list. Now you can later jump directly to this page by selecting "New Users.htm" from your Favorites list. Another very useful page to save to the Favorites is the "Hot Sheet".
You can Right-click on a hyperlink to open it in a separate window. This will keep the initial window open as you view the second window. Simply Right-click on the hyperlink & select "Open in a New Window". Try it on this Right-click example.
In addition to web pages, you can "browse" any hard drive on the network. Just select from the drop-down list or type in the drive letter (for example, "C:", without the quotes) in the small white rectangle in the menu bars at the top. Remember you can save any location (including drive letters or folders) in your "Favorites" list.

Also check out the small black triangle (Ñ ) beside the "Back" & "Forward" buttons, as well as the "History" icon. Selection of anything on these lists jumps you directly to that page.
Copy & Paste; Although you cannot directly edit these "Web" pages, you can "Copy" text (& graphics) from them & "Paste" the text (or graphics) into other files, such as a letter, To-Do List, etc.
To temporarily turn off animations, sounds, etc., click the "Stop" button at the top of the browser window. To re-start them, click the "Refresh" button beside the "Stop" button.
To "permanently" turn off animations, sounds, etc.;
"RUN PROGRAM FROM ITS CURRENT LOCATION";
From time to time, when you click on a link, a dialog box will pop up that looks like the following;

Whenever you get this message on our OfficeWeb, ALWAYS change the setting from "Save this program to disk" to;
"
Run this program from its current location".This will avoid saving some HUGE file to your disk that you don't need anyway. The intent is to run the program file over the network.
The procedure goes something like this;
